perspective is good.. shadows are good.. :)..
the brenches at the bottom are damn cool :D..
:D i like your style :D looks a lot like my "darkhighlands".. it shows 10 castles on platforms.. with drangons and stuff ;) i'll try to find it again and scan it @ my work ;).. 1200dpi will be enough? mwuaha :D
Thanks for comment SE. By the way - they are roots, not branches :P
Id like to see your "darkhighlands". Scan it yea. But 72 dpi is just fine for here. ;)
Nice, this is what i like to see more of on GD. Real artwork during its concept stages.. and allowing us all to watch it develop 8)
Its the best tutorial anyone could ask for actually ;)
I like the idea, it looks organic (the roots) and high tech (the blocks) so good contrasting mix there. Keep it going...
I like the idea, it looks organic (the roots) and high tech (the blocks) so good contrasting mix there. Keep it going...
... THAT is exactly what I was aiming for. :)
The original idea was to paint my interpretation of a city. But I always had an urge to try something surreal so went with it. I tried to keep it simple and quite symbolic. The roots can represent several things. Including; a city sucks life (raw materials, resources - oil etc) out of the earth.
As for the name I came up with; "Orgalopolis". Well polis is some greek for summint to do with cities, but ofcourse there is the word megalopolis, which is a large city or urban complex etc. So I just introduced the "Orga" as in ORGAnic (Orga/Mecha etc) due to the roots.
Testing out colour in ps for the painting. Painting the buildings grayscale was my plan. Then I dont need to faff about with hue messing things up. It would all be simple. But thought green would look better. Can't say I like these colours as colours, but I decided to go with this:
Right, well here is where I have got to so far. Painted in oils. Just block colours, except in the bottom right city where I started shading a bit. I quite like it how it is. But im sure it will look a hell of a lot better once some nice blended shadows and highlights are added (a bit like bottom right corner city).
For any of you who know 3d programs; I think of this atm as a standard auto lighting green clay render. But once I do all the fun part of blending in shadows etc, I think of it as radiosity lighting. :D
Xeo.. _O_ you handle paint much better than i do :D.. thats what i know for surte :D
(i alwais hated oilpainting @ school ;).. /me likes /6B -> HB graphite pencils :D :D.. )

WHAHA :D "fish" MWUAHAH :D
ok ;) i'll try ;) its A3.. i'm quit sure the scanner handles it.. but i think i have to resize it a bit ;) .. and eehm.. 72dpi scans are crappy ;).. however ;) its just material to show-off here ;)gheghe :p..
Well I didn’t mean scan it at 72 dpi, necessarily. But change its dpi down in ps at least, anything for web is always 72dpi, as monitors can only display 72 pixels in an inch (or a bit more on some monitors lol). Uploading a high dpi scan will only increase it px dimensions so it looks massive, not improve quality.
hehehe nice lecture on pixels there Xeo ;)
Oh stop the talk... let your painting have a say too... hurry up with that radiosity lighting. Its developing nicely, but concentrate on the roots since they'll be harder to shade / bring out that rounded look and feel.
Yea i'm going to do the base colour of the roots this evening. Unfortionatly I cant do the "radiosity" on the buildings yet as I have to wait untill the oil drys out a bit more. Could be a day or two. :(
Yea for sure, I want something with the drying speed somewhere between the speed of acrylic and the speed of oils. But with the viscosity etc of oils. I could add Liquin to make it dry faster I guess. Or just get a hairdryer on it. :D
Yea I use/have used a little crappy hair dryer. Well I shouldnt really use anything, too much rapid drying can cause cracking in paint I think. Best to dry natural. Anyway I left it a little too late because I was at work, so now the paint is too dry for my liking. Nevermind I can still work with it.

yeah ur right.. dont trydrying with multiple layers.. you get cracks for sure.. ;)..

I think Picasso would turn around in his grave after hearing this !
Yeah, you’re right about loosing creative flow bio, I have had that happen to me before because I procrastinated about it. Anyway, a little update here. Did some work on the shadows on the main center city. But still needs some work as well as highlights. Started doing the mud/rock underneath, but it’s only a basis and liable to change a bit after I add some texture to it etc. Slowly but surly I will get there. :)
Thats great, its looking awesome. The lighting is spot on (except the roots which you're still working on). Good to see such fast improvements happening.. keep it up :)
Yeah, I will be working on the roots next.. this evening in fact :D
Also I’ve decided to do the background a low colour saturated cool blue. It will gently graduate from darker at the top to lighter at the bottom. I think this will look alright, as I don’t want it to be to intrusive and distract from the cities at all.
I wasn't happy with the background, so had plans to re-paint it a bit darker and more "moody". But, now I can’t be bothered. Maybe one day I will finish it 100% and get a high-quality scan rather than this photo. But for now I will concentrate on digital painting.
Click here for all the stages together, one after another.
Thank you all for your interest earlier on in the project.

Cheers Red. Yea, I’m painting it atm actualy. Kinda tedious and is killing my eyes.
Photograph of it before I started painting:
Well all i can say is that i am looking forward from you on this one!

i love sketching, and this one has perfect scaling / perspective

Awesome colours, awesome geometry i like it alot
lol i have some nice drawings just as good as that just gotta get my scanner up (Old peice of crap)
Nice work though dude
Thanks Sith, Cal :)
Yea, crack your scanner out i'd like to see some drawings.

Just wait for it to dry i say, but dont wait too long.. you may start losing your creative flow.. if you leave an idea untouched for too long.

It still looks great both in terms of concept and colouring. You got your point accross and im sure you got good marks for it ;)
Digital painting eh? I think its a good way to go!
Yeah, got good marks indeed. ;)
Digi Painting, yeah! - No more washing brushes etc... I recently got myself a Wacom Intuos3 A5 tablet too.
Wow im jealous! Im still behind.. havnt added/upgraded my pc in 3 years now :?
One thing i love about digital painting... Ctrl + Z
Yeah, yeah - of course, not forgetting ctrl+z, masking and various post-production adjustment tools. I need more (and better) RAM though. :(
I'll go make a new topic on this subject. I dont wanna take it off-topic cos i wanna talk about this too
Oh right, okay. :| To the other topic! See you there.
