Hey guys,
Activity seems to be slow these days, i guess everybody is being lazy not coming up with new artwork/projects, and not many encountering problems to post and share with the rest? Well, thats perfect - makes our lives so much easier dont you think? hehehe
Ok, first of all i wanna thank you guys cos looking through the Site Related forum its packed with feedback, so very pleased that everyone is expressing their views and opinions on the site, things to improve, bugs and the rest. This is a group effort as always has been.
I've been thinking about where to go from here and what to do with GfxDiary. Me and Thomas are busy working on another separate project - another world, a super community but thats a different story which is not related to graphics or this site (i'll give u more details when we progress further). However, working on this new project brought out ideas which i think can now become reality.
When i came up with the name GfxDiary, i wanted people to get their own personal pages where they can express themselves and write about their design/non design related work. Sort of like a diary/blog - keep track of things, and let your friends, fans and the rest of the world know whats your work status is and tell them about your current affairs. This is a good chance for people to gain massive exposure, showcase their tallent and to get more involved into the web/design scene as well as make new friends and develop skills together.
Therefore, in the future it is possible that GfxDiary may be giving its members a diary page/subdomain to log their thoughts, work, schedules and gain public feedback for their personal topics. It would serve useful for designers and non designers, webmasters and people who dont have the hosting and desperatly need a stronghold to arm themselves.
As always, its about you the members - you control what you want so im asking for your opinions? Do you think its the right path to go? Do you have any other ideas that you would like GfxDiary to posses as it moves to the next level? Express yourself
something like a blog?
How bout a team creation? Team showcase area? Some kind of global contest. That is either solo or team competitive like a request and teams or people compete to go against each other and they are giving so many points or credits upon the victory. Great for people who need art and for the people creating it as they are getting more experience in creating art. But we all know no one wants to spend an hour on art and not having it used or be showcasing it in the future so each person who makes a request should have to comment on what he didnt like about it and why he chose the one he chose in extensive detail.
I think it's a good idea. I think most of Gfx Forum members came here to learn design and to test and improve their skills. I can't say for everybody but as for me GfxDiary is not just the place to talk with interesting people but the way to develop. I think there should be more gfx contest with prizes (as sim sad) and not just among elite designers but among newbies and medium designers (I don't know what does it mean :)).
Oh and I think It's time to make "GfxDiary Award" for best sites like "Golden Web Award". I know that I shouldn't even dream of getting such but for other peoples it will be an additional "proud points".
our own subdomain/diary/blog sounds like a great idea!
All of the things I can thing of have already been done. But I'll keep thinking :)
Some interesting points being brought up there, thanks.
Sim, a battle system is not feasible as the way to go because it will not have the same appeal to all the members. Some would participate some would just take the back seat and watch.
BlaZe, i understand where you're comming from. There are plans to launch a few contests based on points and the winner could get a GfxDiary Seal/Award graphic. I do have doubts over how many people would actually participate but seeing how successful the Biomutation Splash contents is going i think its something that could be implemented and something to look forward to.
There is a new poll for you to vote and tell us what you want more on GfxDiary. Keep your comments comming...
Maybe there could be (if it's possible) a link to a persons gallery or any tutorials they have written, on their profile page or on a post they have postedat the bottom with the msn, site links etc...
Wel, at the moment there is a function that displays all the tutorials written by an individual. And each person has their own individual album in the gallery so its as simple as the user themself gathering these links and displaying them in their GfxForum/Profile signature if they like. But sure, it should be displayed in a member's own profile page, its not very difficult to do so i'll keep that in mind for future development!
Make the site more optomized for search engines. No. index.php?ect.

the site is working with google, i had the google toolbar a while ago, and he ranked the forum pages as well, only 3/10 but who cares, it caches them! And yes, the time i saw this we had the $_GET vars, just like now ...
I just didnt read `stuff everybody wrote here, cause i know it is just plans and bla bla. Well maybe you rise the ammount of users and make just forums work, then think of future? For me it is just a place with programmers and weak minded youngers, who just say stuff and dont do a stuff at all. I guess one person was right, when he said GfxDiary will stay so all the time.
My 2 cents
It's hard to say something remotely tactful about the last comment, so I won't.
Ok let me tackle RedD: First of all, thats your problem whether to read what people post or not, but for your information these plans are usually the ones that end up becoming a reality in the future. If you want to see the evidence just read up on GfxDiary's history in the About section. It wasnt born like this for your information! :?
About your comment of programmers and weak minded youngsters, thats your own individual opinion but that comment only highlights how weak your own mind is. If you dont want to be here then be my guest nobody is stopping you
And whoever you're talking about, well let them return to GfxDiary in 2005 and then see the results for themself and judge if its still the same or not ;)
Now back to the main issue here, if you dont have anything on topic please dont bother spraying it!
Then why post this crap? Got nothing to say, dont post.
No if you got nothing to "stay" then dont "stay". OK?
Well if i was the one person with such opinion, but some more people support mine opinion. I can say i almost left this place now, as you can mention i dont post much in the last weeks.
Also if GfxDiary becomes cool place i am cool with it. I was just viewing mine opinion so no need to bug me.

Makes no sence. Was there some kind of rule that can say it is so? I guess no, so please man leave your childish tricks for others. If you lookign for reasons to make me mad and so i start sh*ting on you, so it gives you reasons to bann me, why making such hard moves and not just bann me with no reason?
Ok now i am leaving this topic, for not being abused as an out of topic poster, since Trico started it first.
Good, lets keep it on topic! I wont even counter that post.
This topic is started to understand what people want to see in the future. I was asking what members want in 2005 to make their experience even better. Your comments dont really help and starting a fight with programmers in this topic isnt the right way to be "cool", so please understand what im trying to say here and gracefully dissapear from this thread its as simple as that.
I've got an idea, On the main page there could be a little window like the main forum bit but only showing the threads which have new posts, or ones which you might be interested in (maybe there could be a feature which lets you click which words or phases you want to look for).
isnt me and thomas the only programmers here? and isnt redD one of the youngest people on this forum?
Sim lets not get into that again - stay on topic! :x
Godless, damn how lazy can u be? The forum already tells you which forums have new posts, we can never fit all of that on the main page, it'll get too crowded. So far, the only two things i may add to GfxDiary's main page is the Online Status - include a Who is Where so you know what member is browsing what section of the site!
The other idea is to have a Featured Member Box which randomly picks out a member and displays information such as name, number of points, number of posts and rank!
Member box sounds interesting to me!
instead of a featured member box. How bout a featured site box. just display there site instead of name, points, rank. Who cares about all that? ^_^
There will be a link to their site if they filled in their profile data properly
ok ok cool. can i be the first featured member for the month?
I DID SAY IT WILL BE RANDOMLY GENERATED!
I'm sure we can come to some arrangment... :) If he's willing to accept bribes; ... if that doesn't work I'll have to resort to blackmail

Very :)
This member box thing sounds like a very good idea :D
I've got another idea. How about adding "show all pictures (of certain author)" in the gallery section.
can a selection by 'number of comments' be added....it will sort the most 'feedbacked' pics first.
And maybe something that shows new coments.
thats already there...if you click on 'last comments' it will display all the art that has recieved the latest comments
Oh... Then maybe make the gallery space larger if you have a high level. For the newbies - 2mb, 1level - 3... etc.?
and add Log times to the site.
might increase ranking rates
:p
@ BlaZe: That has already been done, GfxElites get 5MB of space on the Gallery, any other rank gives you 2MB to show how important it is to reach the GfxElite status!
@ SithLord: The site records the last time a person visited, but not the overall duration spent on GfxDiary. Thats a useless statistic, that will require too much processing time. You can already tell how much people invest into GfxDiary by looking at their statistics such as Post & Points count. However, we will improve the member profiles to include this info as well as a link to the member's gallery and how many pictures they contain
Any other rank 2mb?! I have 4mb available... oops why did I said that? :)
Oh and I didn't find place where I can see my free space.
However, I think that I have only 2mb, but why does it write "You have ...(I don't remember what) 4096kb!"? :?:
lol...its being nice to you..
We can check how much space you guys use, i guess the system hasnt been expanded to show members their own quota. I'll add that to our list of things to do when we finish working on our project!
Edit: All size allocations have now been refixed. I think someone (Thomas) has been overly generous around here giving people more space. Its better to be vigilant than relax till we run out of server space
Just have a small questions. Do you have unlimited space? There are 500+ registred users, if everyone fills his gallery... 500*2mb = 1Gb (!!!)
wow ya... wuddup wid dat? and the member range is even growing at a faster rate than ever
Exactly, glad you guys know what im dealing with. We dont have unlimited space, and with the other projects sharing the same resources i have to be extra cautious. My planning needs to be spot on or GfxDiary will go down :?
Go down? What a terrible words! Let's everybody give 1$ to make larger space! :)
i was talking to elf because he wanted to hear me play guitar, and he said we should have a Music section were people can listen to u online....but i think he meant, or what we should do, is have an Audio Chatroom, sorta like Teamspeak (if u guys heard of it) on the site :)
Heheh BlaZe thanks for the thought, but we wont need donations. We could offer GfxPlus accounts for paid users who receive more features, a subdomain, more space for low prices to raise the money needed. That way instead of donating you'll be better off paying for a service, which helps maintain the site's future. Anyway, thats very very far - we still have a year or so before thinking of such plans! But be assured, i know where the site is going, and the last thing i want to do is make this a place people have to pay for to enjoy
once you need ad's on your site and donations, then you know your doing something wrong.
Quote:
I have to disagree; donations can help. Placed in some sort of subtle location under user control panel/profile, making it optional for people who wish to be supportive. Say in only a year that maybe half the number of registered users here paid something basic basic like £0.25 / €0.37 / $0.44 - Thats still a fair amount of money for covering areas of bandwidth hosting etc.
I don't know how much adds generate but I for sure would prefer this place without them. The paid services sounds like a great route to go down too... why not both ?
Well, while you guys are using this version of GfxDiary a new one is being streamlined and built. This time the engine is being made from the ground up for maximum power. No bugs, since its 100% our code - even phpBB will be ditched for our own version. This is the REAL reason why we havnt been working to fix the bugs on this site, only critical errors and maintenance tasks.
I want to get rid of the Nuke element of the site, make it simpler to browse and navigate. How many of u went :o when u first looked at this new version of the site? Its too crowded, too much for the visitor to take in - especially for someone who doesnt know his way around portals.
But i must admit, ads so far is our primary way of supporting the costs of the site and our other projects - maybe having paid accounts will bypass that but who knows. Only time will tell!
Ok, theres progress being made, and here are the screenshots to keep you on your feet.
GfxDiary/CodeUnit 2005
FriendScene
Both rely heavily on CSS and not many images so expect massive speed improvements! Check out how simple the next version of GfxDiary looks, what do you guys think? Keep this one or do u fancy the new layout?
Zzzz boring, both projects look bad to me now, GfxDiary is keeping shut down in summer.
Thanks for the "positive" feedback RedD - at least we have projects to keep us busy - something to do with any little spare time we get ;)
I suggest u hold ur bad views till they're released and we'll see who has the last word!
both screenshots look a bit like those irritation advertising startpages you get from spyware. I hope there will be a bit more design :)
I like Codeunit.com i think it looks clean and nice, but friendscene i dont like, coloring or something bothers me. But keep at it man.
