Character Rigging in 3DS MAX

If anyone can help me, this means you elf, on how to set up a charecter for rigging in 3ds max. Charecter rigging using bones. PLLLEEEAAASSSEEEE HELP!!!!!!

ya ive been tyring to find out too so i can rig my mech guy

its pretty easy...the hardest part is not what you think..the hardest part is modeling ur character...then basically,go to the control panel, select bones after clicking on the small 'gears' icon at the top of the panel...click and drag to create bones, once you have the preffered length of a bone, clcik again to start a new one that is automatically linked to the tip of the first one...and so on so forth...i suggest you freeze you character before doing this cause if you have "snap" options on, the bone coordinates will f___ up with those of ur model...so freeze u model and create the bones as if ur working on one 'area' as in xy,yz or xz depending where ur model is and on which area it is most defined...so after creating all these linked bones flatly, you then give them 'depth' as in you move-rotate them to conform into the body...the fins on the bones determine how much amount of the model each bone will 'carry' depending where the fin reaches or how many faces it is in indirect contact with (oximoron alert) then, once all ur bones conform to ur body, select the body/character/model wtvr and go to the modifier menu and select 'skin' modifier...then in this skin modifier select all the bones....warning: this is a VERY basic process and I dunno many of the more complex options for bones but this can get u rollin with bones well enough to be confortable with the complicated tutorials u will find on www.3dlinks.com or www.3dtotal.com

yes dudes, get used to it, ELF isnt the only 3dexpert at gfxdiary anymore ^^, he's still the fearsome mod though ;), and a respected 3d-artist :)

excelent, more people too help

I tought Sith that!! Or something...
Guess I was too slow on this one Sith, but I'll get it next time! ;)
Also, with max ships some tutorials on using Character Studio, which after my opinion is WAAAAAY easier...
Sorry I can't explain it to you, but I'm actually no good at rigging, I suck at it to be honest...

you didnt teach me that ELF....3dsmax 5 character rigging tutorial did, plus, the ten million riggin tutorials online+ comon sense :p

you tought me everything else about 3dsmax rather

also,i forgot a small detail in my mini tutorial: when you have ur model freezed and ur about to create the bones flatly, create them in a way which fits the charcter when you look at one viewport at least(like if its a human character, its gonna be a more vertical model, so who cares if the legs r flexed or not, just open the viewport where ur human is full frontal  (front viewport) then freeze the bastar...the model and create the bones 'in' the model...then when ur done and have all the bones,go to the top viewport in this case, select all the bones and move them into the model cose they might be flat on the axis but not ur model...then go to the left/right viewport and start rotating the bones so that they conform more into the body (ex: flexed leg, in the front view u dont see that and ur bones r strait but in the left view, rotate the bones so that they flew with the leg or any other part)

Note :: if you have created a chain of bones but want to create more bones but want to get back to the original one (as in,you want this new one to link to the first bone and not the last) click on the 'tail' of the first bone to make the one ur doing now link to the first one and not the last one in that chain...

Note :: u can do this step obviously at any point of ur 'chain' all you have to do is click on the tail of a bone to link the one ur making to the latter's tip...

Good luck guys! yea...what a 'small' detail  :P

oh u need character studio to create bones?

no,i wasnt talking about the studio...im talking about the usual bones from the control panel->small buttons at the top->'gear' button (the last one) then bone

okay i just got confused :| it happens sometimes

ok,go into 3d max, then go to the control panel on the right,at the top of that u have all those small buttons, like 'create' 'modify' and they have small pics on them, one has a measuring tape on it...select the right-most button (the one with the pic of a gear on it) and then click on bones....then follow the mini tut above i guess...

btw,ask away,id love to help anyone as much as possible

Oh sorry, my bad... :(
Character studio is often easier to work with when rigging human like characters, and it ships with max 5 and 6, often already installed.
But try out Sith's before throwing yourself into the possibilities with charater studio...
