the black top menu

the black top menu is very irretating when i scroll up at this site.

is i the only one who means that?

You're referring to our trademark dancing menu? :D
Well, heres the situation, it shakes and bounces because of a bug in Internet Explorer 5.5+, on all other browsers it works fine, smooth and without any problems. We predict Microsoft will fix this bug in future versions of IE!

hehe allrigt..

i'll try to install another browser then :P

It's not just IE I'm afraid I've got AOL 8 and it still happens. But it don't annoy me much at all.

AOL uses IE

IM BUG FINDER

i can make black bar disapear

if you start with the scroll bar all the way at the top and click the scroll down button once, waa laa the black menu is gone. move the scroll bars again, waa laa they reapear

Like sim said, AOL is based on IE (just covered up in rubbish interface) - they both use the mozilla engine!
Win2005 is coming out soon and im sure there will also be a new update to IE which should solve the shaky/dancing menu problem. For now, it may appear annoying but you'll get used to it. I hardly notice it anymore!

My attention has only reakky just been drawn to it, I notice it now all the time, but still it is only slightly annoying...

It behaves the same in Opera as it does IE, but in Netscape7 atleast it remains at the top. (on another note; why aren';t the menu items centred ?)

Couldn't it just be replaced with a static menu, its not that essential and there are plenty of workable CSS alternatives.

I thought people tried hard to be backward compatible; think about it... you've still got designers that are forced to *beep* about with Netscape and many other inbetween'ER browesers/versions. Things will just move up a tier and IE6 will become the new victim to that supposed "backward compatibility".

..but I guess that proves your just looking to the future, maybe even a little too much. :P

Some good pointers in that post there Trico. Firstly, the menu is 100% CSS! The menu buttons arent centered because i programed it as one DIV layer (with the logo on the left and the items in 25% away from the logo giving the illusion its in the center) :P

About the backwards compatiblility, well i tried many tricks and techniques to make that menu stable and solid, but almost all didnt work. I then found out that mozilla has a refresh rate problem that prevented the menu from travelling smoothly (while the user scrolls around on the page). Now if you look at the Biomutation menu, i've created a clever trick. The menu doesnt start traveling until you stop scrolling, then it'll attempt to travel back to its rightful place on the page! On GfxDiary this will be even more annoying since the menu is horizontal!

Plus we all look forward to future technology, clever software and better programming 8)

If you haven't already seen this site: Listamatic - A handy resource at that.

Thanks for the link, i've looked all through the site, although its similar method of CSS i used on the GfxDiary menu, it doesnt have the smooth scrolling we need. But heres a clever way to get around it:
What if we have a PIN where you can tell the menu to stay at top (fixed) or move around (float). It'll be cookie controlled to remember your choice throughout your visit so long as you're logged on.

Hmm, it'll be kinda hard but nevertheless, it can be done ;)

Well, i guess you guys got your way in the end :) Our trademark dancing black menu has been stopped. Its now sitting safely and lonly at the top of the site where it rightfully belongs. However, as always, use this time to test out the site, and if you ever miss the menu following you and providing you with some company then you know where to post
